Several applications of the same type are selected based on project needs. These applications are then evaluated to see which one(s) fit(s) best into the project's frame of requirements. Other considerations are costs, ease of use, extensions... Often, only one or two out of half a dozen or more applications survive this process. However, the other applications are also kept on a list as they might meet future projects' requirements.
